Geysers, frozen waterfalls, glaciers, volcanic landscape, thermal springs and stunning scenery. Continuing my journey across 66 deg north. What a spectacular country My first visit to Iceland in March 2009 bowled me over. An unspoilt jewel in the arctic circle Atlantic.

My journey started at Reykjavik and continued along the infamous Route 1. Blizzards, snow drifts, clear skies, horizontal freezing rain...I had it all along the route. An incredibly challenging photo shoot in such conditions. All images captured from the south part of Iceland. Next stop, the north side!

    Gullfoss (Golden Falls) is a massive waterfall located in the canyon of Hvítá river in southwest Iceland. It is is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. The wide Hvítá rushes southward and 1km above the falls it turns sharply to the left and flows down into a wide curved three-step "staircase" and then abruptly plunges in two stages into a crevice 105 ft deep. The crevice is 60 ft wide, and 2.5 km in length, is at right angles to the flow of the river. The part frozen falls took my breath away as I first approached. Spectacular is just not grand enough to describe it. I trust the pictures help. Olympus E3, 12-60mm SWD.
    In order to cut out a section of route 1 SE of Reyjavik on my way to Geysir I decided to take the scenic route, through the mountains. The views were magical, as this image shows but unfortunately is was not a wise decision in a bog standard hire car. The road surface deteriorated into a surface like that on the moon, and a tyre blew. Tyre change in a raging blizzard with wind chill at -10C was not nice.
