16th & 17th Jan 2012. This mesmorising star trail was captured over 7 hours during the evening of 16th and early hours of 17th. An exceptional clear sky evening complemented the first series of #bbcstargazing live. To capture this star trail effect required leaving the dslr on tripod shooting continuous 15s exposures for the entire evening. Air temps dropped to -2C overnight so I needed to use the DIY dew shield (which also acts as a heater thus prolonging battery life). The following morning I retrieved the camera from the field and imported the many thousands of images into stacking software (StarStax) which produced the final composite you see. The result is the wonderful visual effect of earths rotation, shown through the stars spinning around the celestial north star (Polaris). The following Camera settings were used: Olympus E5 with 8mm fisheye, 15s @ F3.5 ISO 500 Foreground paint lit with few remote flash bursts. The orange glow is light pollution from Leicester, even though the city is approx 13miles away!
